This week, I had the opportunity to work in the Safehouse. The focus of the story was on the smoking ban's impact on this espresso bar, and the "same as it ever was" attitude that keeps them going strong. Being a non-coffee drinker and non-smoker, this was the perfect assignment.

When I entered the shop, I was greeted by the wonderful staff and given free rein of the place. Even though I felt very welcomed, I didn't want to stifle the atmosphere by bringing a bunch of lights; which is my usual gig. I decided to shoot au natural for a change! The hardest part was deciding to leave my comfortable ISO200 and deal with the noise... but think noise adds character on a shoot like this. We'll see how the editor feels about it.

Only one of the following images was shot with strobes - free photoflex reflector to the first photographer that correctly identifes the image and provides a correct lighting diagram! It should be obvious :-)

The Safehouse was a wonderful group and I will definitely be back - after a shoot on that side of town... even if I only drink the bottled water.
