I was asked by the weekly to photograph the new Superintendent of TUSD, they wanted a cover headshot as well as some images for stock - I only had 5 minutes with Ms. Fagen and was able to get what I needed. I chose these two images to illustrate the different personalities an image can have -- even taken with the exact equipment int he same location at the same time... Just moving my single light and reframing created a number of images that could be used to portray different personality traits over Ms. Fagen's tenure at TUSD.

Notice in the first image, the lighting is coming in from the left, and there's a bright spot on the wall directly behind her head. I used a single umbrella and set the angles up so that the reflection of the umbrella created this bright area. This created separation between her dark hair and the wall. The contrasty light gave a bit of a somber tone to the image.

In this one, I wanted her to be fun, and approachable. The Cat in the Hat was too great an opportunity to pass up -- I brought the light in closer to reduce the contrast on her face and still provide separation on the right side (camera right) of her hair -- the hot spot on the wall also highlights the Seuss Cat.

In the 5 minute session, I shot 15 slightly different portraits conveying different personality traits and trying to show Ms. Fagen at her best!

Below is this week's cover. They actually printed 3 portraits from this session in the issue. Others will be used in the future.
